The Société d’Encouragement aux Métiers d’Art (company for the promotion of artistic trades) reports to the Secretary of State for enterprises and external trade and its purpose, in conjunction with trade organisations, is to add value to the artistic trades sector, both in France and abroad, via two main missions: information and promotion.

Informing
The SEMA performs its monitoring and information role through its resource centre, video library and website so as to increase general public awareness of artistic trades.
Its information database, especially on training courses, allows it to target youth and to increase their awareness of these trades and their career prospects in France and Europe.
The SEMA answers requests from all over France from professional artists, institutions and local government.
The information tools that it has developed are intended to promote the economic development of the artistic trades sector and can be accessed via its website. www.metiersdart-artisanat.com .
The SEMA has implemented innovative devices for promoting financial growth amongst the companies involved, especially in the areas of employment and company creation / acquisition, via specific partnerships within the framework of the European EQUAL programme.

- With the ANPE (French national employment agency): increased professionalism in respect of artistic trades so that some agencies have become specialists in these trades and better general understood of the trades; this partnership also aims to implement information actions and create employment opportunities through artistic trades for young people
- With Marne-la-Vallée University, Implementation of a course for a specific licence in artistic trades aimed at company creation / acquisition in order to enhance the transmission of rare know-how.
- The SEMA has initiated an Annuaire Officiel des Métiers d’Art (Official artistic trades directory) that is aims to make French artists better known in Europe and internationally.

Promoting
The SEMA offers communication tools that are dedicated to artistic trades. Its 'Galerie d’actualité' is a Paris exhibition space where artistic trades can be discovered that is available for SEMA members to use. SEMA edits the bimonthly review 'Métiers d’Art' and coordinates spectacles and other events.
In addition, its events coordination role also includes:
- The SEMA awards for professionals and young people in training, which ensure that there is communication on artistic trades throughout the year, at departmental, regional and national levels.
- The Journées des Métiers d’Art (artistic trades days) is a national event that was jointly launched in 2002 by the Ministers for SMEs, Trade, Trades People and Self-employed Professions and has since become an incontestable meeting place between the trades and the general public (workshop open days, exhibitions, information on training in artistic trades).
- The Rencontres Nationales des Métiers d’Art (national artistic trades convention) is an annual meeting involving all the players in the artistic trades that aims to capitalise on the issues and exemplary actions in the sector to create a structuring development dynamic through exchanges.
